The concept of a wellness program conjures up different thoughts for different people. Is it simply a perk that sounds splashy? Or, can it make a meaningful difference in the lives of employees and, moreover, the company as a whole? You may be surprised.
More American workers recognize the reward derived from participating in workplace wellness programs, according to a recent survey conducted by The Principal. In fact, 62 percent of workers, up from 55 percent in 2011, believe workplace wellness activities are successful in improving their health and reducing health risks. Skeptical? Don't be.
A well-structured wellness program, especially those that include health coaching and year round activities, can not only help secure top talent but can also help keep employees productively at work.

Still, you may be asking if a program like this really resonates with employees. And, my answer is yes, you bet it does.
In addition to the 62 percent who believe wellness programs improve health, the survey found that:
- 51 percent feel that wellness benefits encourage them to work harder and perform better,
- 59 percent say they have more energy to be productive at work; and,
- Nearly half (45 percent) agree that it would encourage them to stay in their current employment situation.
For employers, this is great news. Why? In the wake of the financial crisis, most companies are stretched thin and, as such, a productive workforce is a natural priority. Also, making progress toward healthier outcomes may, over time, lower premiums and health care costs overall, which is a win/win for both the employee and the company.
With results like these, a comprehensive wellness program may be worthy of consideration. And as they become more popular, everyone can benefit from a happier and more productive work force. Now, that's a smart way to grow a healthier and more successful business.
