Supplemental insurance provider Aflac now offers its Real Cost Calculator, an online tool that helps consumers realize the costs connected with common illnesses and injuries, such as cancer, heart attack and fractured limbs.
As health care costs continue to grow, Aflac finds that consumers could be unaware of the out-of-pocket medical and household costs that would confront them should they or a family member become injured or sick despite having have major medical insurance.
The calculator displays data on medical conditions, such as cancer or stroke, which can lead to thousands of dollars of unanticipated out-of-pocket medical costs and expenses. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, the mean charge for a hospital stay following a heart attack is $65,427.

In three steps, the calculator reveals the potential out-of-pocket medical and household costs as well as other expenses that come with various injuries and illnesses. Consumers can visit Aflac to see how these costs can impact them and what can be done to offset those costs.
"Every day I hear about consumers being blindsided by the unanticipated costs of a medical emergency," says Michael Zuna, Aflac executive vice president and chief marketing and sales officer. "The reality is that costs for treatment show no sign of decreasing – which can mean that consumers will need to cover a wide range of expenses associated with an accident or illness. Our goal with the Real Cost Calculator is to not just reveal how quickly these costs can add up but to empower consumers to be more proactive when it comes to insurance and preparing for the unexpected. We're also able to show them how Aflac can help them in their time of need and cover a portion of those expenses."
By accumulating data from various public sources, the Real Cost Calculator can show the average costs of a variety of medical conditions. Some of these examples include more than $10,000 being the average cost to treat a broken leg, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality; $11,744 being the average annual expense for people diagnosed with diabetes, according to the Healthcare Leadership Council; and $10,000 being the cost of some newer cancer treatments per month, according to the American Cancer Society.
