In New Jersey, industrial employment dropped 1.5 percent from December 2011 to December 2012, which is slightly under the 2.1 percent loss from the 2010-2011 time period, according to the 2013 New Jersey Manufacturers Register, an industrial directory published annually by Manufacturers' News Inc. in Evanston, Ill.
This totals to a loss of 6,024 jobs, MNI finds. With this figure, New Jersey now supports 9,402 manufacturers with 391,596 workers.
"Manufacturers in New Jersey have yet to fully recover from the recession, and high business taxes have affected hiring," says Tom Dubin, president of MNI. "However, the state's educated work force and its reputation as a center for innovation continue to be a draw for new business."

New Jersey's manufacturing sector with the greatest employment is chemicals manufacturing with 73,597 jobs for a 1.3 percent gain. Following are printing and publishing with 43,663 jobs for a 2.8 percent loss and food products with 36,758 jobs for a 5.1 percent loss.
Among the other sectors that experiences losses are transportation equipment at minus 7.4 percent, textiles and apparel at minus 3.9 percent, instruments and related products at minus 3.6 percent, paper products at minus 3.1 percent, electronics at minus 2.9 percent, furniture and fixtures at minus 2.3 percent, rubber and plastics at minus 1.8 percent, and primary metals at minus 1.6 percent, MNI finds.
Northeast New Jersey makes up the state's largest area for industrial employment with 268,191 jobs, dropping nearly 1 percent, followed by northwest New Jersey with 50,113 manufacturing jobs, a decline of 1.3 percent, MNI reveals. Southwest New Jersey accounts for 40,726 jobs, down 3.9 percent, and southeast New Jersey supports 2,566 jobs, falling 3.3 percent.
MNI also reports that Newark is New Jersey's top city for manufacturing employment with 9,286 jobs, a downtick of 3.1 percent, while Princeton accounts for 7,612 jobs, up 1 percent. Moorestown comes in third with 7,222 jobs, a 2.8 percent drop, and fourth-ranked Clifton has 6,918 jobs, which has held steady. Parsippany is fifth with 6,500 jobs, up 3.7 percent.
