The industry's biggest growth drivers in 2012 were solar photovoltaic (PV) energy, in which global capacity increased by 42 percent, and concentrating solar thermal power (CSP), where capacity grew by 61 percent. Spain is driving development of CSP.

During 2012, the U.S. added 3.3 gigawatts (GWs) of solar PV capacity, increasing its total by 85 percent in one year. Germany, by far the world leader in PV, added 7.6 GW last year. According to the Solar Energy Industry Association, the average price of a completed PV home electricity-generating system in the U.S. dropped by 24 percent during the year.
