The public exchange system has lost its third boss.
Rebecca Pearce, the executive director of the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange, resigned Friday.
Critics said that, even though the Maryland's exchange received warm state support, the Maryland Health Connection enrollment system has performed poorly. Maryland had enrolled 3,758 in private coverage through its exchange as of Nov. 30. Officials have said they want to enroll about 150,000 people in private insurance through the exchange by March 31.

The resignation seems to have been sudden. At press time, the exchange still listed her as a speaker on an agenda for a board meeting set to take place Tuesday.
Officials offered no explanation, but political opponents had attacked Pearce for taking a week-long vacation over Thanksgiving.
Carolyn Quattrocki, an aide to Democrat Gov. Martin O'Malley, will be the interim exchange director, officials said.
Coral Andrews, executive director of the Hawa'i Health Connector, gave up her post Friday.
Rocky King, executive director of the Cover Oregon exchange, is taking three months of medical leave.
