High-net-worth women like nontraditional investments. In fact, they like them more than men do.

According to a study of HNW investors by MainStay Investments and Barron's Top Fund Family, HNW women have more alternative investments in their portfolios (27 percent) than men do (20 percent).

More than half the female respondents (55 percent) also said they had increased allocations to alternative investments during the last year, and 27 percent said they intended to further increase them over the next five years.

In addition, women, more than men (60 percent to 47 percent), view alternative investments as mainstream options and also expect that over the next 5-10 years they'll become core investment holdings.

HNW women are goal-setters with regard to their portfolios, with 59 percent ranking the achievement of a goal — such as retirement — very important.

They're also pretty confident (69 percent) that in today's changing economy, alternatives can offer the best opportunities not just to meet those goals and long-term objectives but also for diversification.

"While all investors are growing more aware of the value of nontraditional investments, HNW women are especially interested in the benefits alternatives offer," said Stephen Fisher, president of MainStay Investments.

"This research suggests that HNW women should be approached as goal-oriented, savvy investors with a long-term and growing interest in alternative investments," said Matthew Leung, head of channel marketing strategies at MainStay Investments. "There's clearly a growing eagerness among HNW women to explore the role of alternative investments in their portfolios."
