Investors will soon be able to open individual, joint, IRA and revocable living trust accounts for as little as $5,000 that offer technology-driven automated portfolios, complete with investment advice — also automated.

Charles Schwab Corp. announced that the automated investment advisory service, Schwab Intelligent Portfolios, will be available to retail investors in the first quarter of 2015; RIAs will be able to offer a white-label version "shortly thereafter."

"The service alters the investing landscape by combining innovative technology with proven approaches to advice and the support that only people can provide," said Walt Bettinger, Schwab president and CEO, in a statement, "all without charging program management fees, advice fees, or commissions, while using low cost exchange-traded funds."
