Assurant Health is the latest carrier to jump into the exchange waters. The company said this week it's selling individual major medical plans on exchanges in 16 states during the newly opened second open enrollment period.

Last year, they did not participate in the exchanges.

Assurant Health plans are available on the marketplace in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

Assurant also said it offers its PPACA-compliant individual major medical plans in 41 states outside of the exchange, and offers small group fully insured plans in 34 states outside of the exchanges.

"We are excited to expand our footprint to the marketplace in 16 states, and know consumers value working with trusted agent advisors as they navigate through their health insurance options to find the best coverage to meet their needs," said Charles Steele, Assurant Health executive sales officer. "This is an opportunity for agents to reach markets and customer needs they may not have been able to in the past, so they can say 'yes' to more consumers with individual major medical needs — whether they are subsidy-eligible or not."

More carriers are flocking to PPACA exchanges this enrollment period after sitting on the sidelines or participating minimally during the exchanges' initial rollout last fall.

UnitedHealth said recently it will be competing for exchange business in 23 states after participating in just four PPACA exchanges last year.

According to federal health officials, nearly 80 new carriers will participate in PPACA's marketplace this year, increasing the number of participating carriers by 25 percent.
