Private defined contribution assets will likely total over $6 trillion within three years, according to estimates from Cerulli Associates.

The Boston-based research and analytics firm estimates that total private DC assets will be almost $6.5 trillion as the 2010s come to a close. Most of these assets will be found in 401(k) plans.

"The DC plan is emerging as the primary retirement savings vehicle for individuals," Jessica Sclafani, senior analyst at Cerulli Associates, said.
