Watch out, future retirees (and everyone in the retirement planning business) — the blitz is coming! A PR campaign is about to kick off, its purpose to remind everyone of the need to plan for retirement.
In an effort to focus people's attention on the issue of retirement planning, the National Retirement Planning Coalition, a group of education, consumer advocacy and financial services organizations led by the Insured Retirement Institute, is coordinating a list of planned and suggested activities by the members of the coalition that include everything from social media campaigns and public service announcements to consumer tips, webinars and op-eds.
The campaign kicks off Monday with a conference call at which IRI is expected to highlight research on boomers' retirement expectations. The data comes from IRI's fifth annual report on the topic.

In addition to the Monday call, which will also feature a panel representing financial literacy advocates and industry experts, Tuesday has been designated Social Security Day. Activities will focus on Social Security as part of a retirement strategy, and in addition there will be a webinar for financial professionals hosted by IRI and Franklin Templeton and featuring Fox Business columnist Gail Buckner.
Other events include a lunchtime discussion on retirement security on Capitol Hill on Wednesday and another webinar Thursday that focuses on health care in retirement.
Additional events are planned during the week, with announcements to come as details become available.
In the meantime, NRPC is urging groups and financial firms to become involved via public and client outreach, specialty websites or microsites on the topic, conference calls, letters to the editor and a social media campaign including tweets, Facebook posts and blogging.
While much of the activity surrounding the week is aimed at financial professionals, they are not the only focus of the event.
Both professionals and consumers who are interested in learning more about planning for their retirement will find such tools as a retirement calculator available at NRPC's website, retireonyourterms.org.
