Nearly 12 million people have gained coverage through Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program under PPACA, new data shows.

A new monthly report from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services finds that 11.7 million have been covered under the federal programs since expansion under the law went into effect in 2013.

That's in addition to the 11.7 million who gained health coverage through the law's exchanges.

Enrollment in the programs increased by about 560,000 from the end of January 2015 to the end of February 2015, CMS said. That's about a 20.3 percent increase over the average monthly enrollment for July 2013 through September 2013.

In total, more than 70.5 million residents were enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP as of February 2015.

Of course, numbers varied by state, with states that have chosen to expand the health care program for the poor under PPACA seeing the biggest enrollment boosts.

The report found enrollment increased by about 27 percent in states that had expanded Medicaid compared with by about 8 percent in states that had not expanded program eligibility.

Medicaid expansion continues to be a major bone of contention between some states and the federal government, with the Obama administration continuing to push states to expand the program.

Montana last week became the 29th state to expand Medicaid.
