The payroll service sector must be a brutal place to operate these days.

A survey from Bloomberg BNA found that, while 56 percent of businesses outsourced payroll in 2011, only 12 percent said they do in the latest survey.

That was one of the major findings of the Payroll Benchmarks and Analysis 2015-2016 survey. Since the recession officially ended, companies have been rapidly bringing payroll in house, the survey showed. In 2013, 21 percent said they outsourced it. That trend suggests that, in flush times, employers want to keep a close eye on payroll.
