LifeHealthPro's annual “Top 100” listing aims to not only rank the best of the best in the life insurance and health insurance industry, but to also analyze how carriers stack up against each other, and what, if any, major changes in position have occurred since last year’s Top 100 list was published.
The data for each graph was provided by SNL Financial and was itself pulled from NAIC filings.
One change leaps out when viewing the health insurance company statistics: Anthem ranks No. 1 in three categories this year, but was not listed anywhere in the Top 100 last year. This change is not due to financial performance of the company, but rather late financial filings with SNL Financial.
Other notable differences include Humana’s extreme increase in total enrollment: a jump from 4.4 million enrollees in 2013 to 16.6 million in 2014. This may help explain the company’s sharp increase of $27.3 million in net premiums written year over year. On the life side, Prudential fell in the net premiums written category, down almost 34 percent from 2013 to 2014. AEGON, on the other hand, appeared at the No. 16 spot in last year’s ranking of net premiums written for accident and health, but broke into the top 10 this year, with $1.9 million in NPW.
