The Supreme Court ruled today that same-sex couples have the right to marry.

Gay marriage will become legal in all 50 states.

The court ruled 5-4 in favor. The ruling noted that because of the Constitution's guarantees to Americans of due process and equal protection under the law, states can't ban same-sex marriages.

SCOTUS blog, live-blogging the decision Friday morning wrote: "…the majority opinion rejects the claim that marriage is about procreation, even while saying that protecting children of same-sex couples supports the Court's ruling: 'This is not to say that the right to marry is less meaningful for those who do not or cannot have children. An ability, desire, or promise to procreate is not and has not been a prerequisite for a valid marriage in any State.' "

On the live blog, commenters noted that state offices across the U.S. were open and performing marriages.

"This ruling is a victory for America," President Barack Obama said, in a statement from the White House.
