Is your current employment part of a career, or is it "just a job"? That's the question asked in a recent survey commissioned by Mercer, a global consulting firm, which found that two-thirds of workers believe their current occupation represents a career, while one-third said it was just a job to make money.

The percentage of workers who feel good about their work would be even greater if employers took steps to communicate with employees about their performance and role within the organization, Mercer argues.

According to the survey, 51 percent of employees report receiving input from superiors on how to better perform their jobs never or very rarely. Furthermore, 53 percent said their employers do not often make clear how to advance within the organization.

Mercer suggests there are many workers who would be committed to their current employment if they had a better idea of where their current position was leading them. The survey showed that 78 percent of employees would remain with their present employer if they had a clear understanding of their career path.

"By outlining specific skill sets for career paths, organizations can help employees better understand growth potential within the company and improve overall efforts to retain and motivate their existing workforce," Ilene Siscovick, North America Talent and Career Leader at Mercer.
