IRA owners moved deeper into equities during 2013, compared with 2010–2011.

That's according to research from the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI).

Its fifth analysis of the EBRI IRA Database revealed the following about where IRA assets are being allocated by IRA owners:

  • 54.7 percent in equities

  • 10.1 percent in balanced funds

  • 15.3 percent in bonds

  • 11.6 percent in money

  • 8.4 percent in other assets

Adding the percentage of assets in equities within balanced funds to the overall equity allocation made the total rise to 60.7 percent of assets.

According to the study, in 2010 the percentage allocated to equities stood at 45.7 percent, but in 2011 it fell to 44.4 percent.

However, in 2012 there was a "sharp increase" to 52.1 percent "and another to 54.7 percent in 2013."

In 2013, IRAs owned by males and females had nearly equal average allocations to bonds, equities, and money, the study said.

But accounts owned by males were more likely to have assets in the other-assets category, while accounts owned by females had a higher percentage of assets in balanced funds.

Research found that, for IRAs owned by those aged 25 or older, bond allocations rose with the owner's age; at the same time, the percentage allocated to equities with the equity share from balanced funds decreased.

The amount allocated to other assets increased and the amount allocated to balanced funds decreased as IRA owners' ages rose from 25 through 84.

The categories of other assets and bonds rose as the account balance rose, from less than $10,000 to $250,000 or more (from 2.2 percent to 9.6 percent and from 5.2 percent to 18.0 percent, respectively).

In addition, the percentage allocated to money fell from 24.1 percent for accounts with less than $10,000 to 15.2 percent for accounts with $10,000$24,999.

It continued to decline, albeit slowly, till it hit 10.9 percent for accounts of $250,000 or more.
