A change in location may be in store for the much caricatured psychiatrist's couch.

Thanks to a leading telemedicine provider, that couch may  be in the patient's living room—and the shrink could be on the other side of the continent.

Doctor on Demand has just unveiled its latest telemedicine service: video visits to psychiatrists.

The company has already pioneered video appointments with physicians, psychologists and lactation specialists. Now, it will add sessions via smartphones, tablets and computers with licensed psychiatrists to the menu.

Health plans and employer groups comprise its primary market niche.

The company can connect patients with more than 300 mental health professionals, thereby addressing an area of medicine characterized by ongoing and critical shortages.

"Many Americans don't have access to mental health treatment, and for those that do, long wait times, distance, cost and stigma are still barriers to getting care. These are all challenges telemedicine can address," said Dr. Donovan Wong, medical director of mental health at Doctor On Demand. "By adding psychiatrists to our network, Doctor On Demand is making it easier for millions of Americans to get mental health care from the comfort of home."
