At a recent conference, researchers from the American Heart Association presented a list of the eight least healthy professions in America.
It's not clear, of course, whether some workers are less healthy because of their jobs or if the workforce that certain jobs attract is less healthy due to other factors, such as socioeconomic conditions.
The study was based on a survey of 5,500 workers above the age of 45. While there were some positive trends overall, including a declining smoking rate, only 41 percent of the overall population was found to have "ideal cardiovascular health."

According to the study, 90 percent of cops and firefighters are either overweight or obese. Although the portly policeman enjoying a donut has long been a stereotype, the popular image of a firefighter is one whose duty to save people from burning buildings keeps him in peak physical condition.
Who do you imagine has the worst eating habits? According to the study, those employed in food services don't have the best track record for healthy eating. Remember, we're largely talking about people who work in the distribution of unhealthy, processed foods. Furthermore, the food service industry is dominated by low-wage jobs. America's poor, due to a variety of factors, from food deserts to a lack of education on healthy food options, have poorer diets than those who are better off economically.
"There tends to be generally poorer cardiovascular health for those in lower paying jobs, and better cardiovascular health in those with higher paying jobs," Donald Lloyd-Jones, a professor of heart research at Northwestern University, told HealthDay.
Indeed, the study showed that the healthiest workers were those towards the top of the ladder, professionally and economically. Only 6 percent of managers smoke, a rate that amounts to a third of the national average. But 72 percent of them nevertheless had poor eating habits, a proportion lower than blue collar employees but still tragically high. Other professions with poor health include salesmen, support and administrative staff, transportation and material movers, and those working in business and finance.
