The Mutual Fund Industry Awards, presented annually for 22 years by the editorial staff of Fund Action and Fund Directions, recently honored the 23rd and latest crop of individuals and companies for their excellence, achievements and contributions to the mutual fund industry.

The publications are leading sources of intelligence for the U.S. mutual fund industry, and their determinations on awards are based on their industrywide due diligence.

Relying on market intelligence as well as input from the industry garnered through an annual call for nominations, the editorial staff’s latest selections were honored this week when the awards were presented.

Nominees and winners came in a range of categories, including Trustee of the Year, Lifetime Achievement—Fund Directions, Lifetime Achievement—Fund Actions, Rising Stars of Mutual Funds, and even Alternative Product of the Year.

But for the retirement industry some were particularly relevant. Among those was Empower Retirement, honored at this year’s ceremony as Retirement Leader of the Year.

Empower, formed in late 2014 with the acquisition of J.P. Morgan Retirement Plan Services (RPS) large-market recordkeeping business and the suesequent integration of the retirement services business of Putnam Investments by Great-West Financial, became the second largest retirement services provider in the country.

It currently administers $411 billion in assets for 7.6 million participants, and serves all segments of the employer-sponsored retirement plan market: government 457 plans, small, midsize, and large corporate 401(k) clients, non-profit 403(b) entities and private-label recordkeeping clients.

Also honored within the retirement arena were these people:

  • Trustee of the Year—Phil McLoughlin of Virtus Funds
