Many Republican leaders have swallowed their pride and committed to supporting Donald Trump for president, saying that, in spite of his theatrics, offensive and racially-tinged statements, and frequent deviations from conservative orthodoxy, he is still more likely to pursue policies they agree with than Hillary Clinton.
But on health care, one of the biggest issues the next president is expected to deal with, many conservatives wonder whether Trump really represents a preferable alternative to the former secretary of state.
As is the case in many policy arenas, Trump's pronouncements on health care have been inconsistent and occasionally outlandish. He vacillates across the political spectrum, sometimes changing his mind day by day.

He has promised to ensure universal coverage, even hinting at times that the government will pay for a massive expansion of care, but the official plans that he has released in writing make no such promises.
Trump has also said that he will guarantee coverage for those with preexisting conditions, but at times has voiced different opinions about whether there should be an insurance mandate, a provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that is widely seen as necessary to sustain a system in which insurers are required to cover everybody.
"I'd say it's still pretty uncertain," Doug Holtz-Eakin, a longtime Republican health policy adviser, told The Hill. "What he has said in the debates isn't what's on his website, which makes you wonder which version you should pay attention to."
"Beyond asserting that he wants to do this, the explicit plan to try to do something about it has been really inadequate to the task," James Capretta, a health care analyst at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, adds.
The one thing Trump has been consistent on, however, has been Medicare. Of course, that isn't necessarily good news for conservatives, since unlike them, Trump has said he is absolutely committed to maintaining the elderly health care program in its current form, and bashed primary opponents who suggested changes to it.
