Cleveland may currently claim the No. 1 spot in pro basketball, but when it comes to vision, it's mired in last place.
Whereas Reno, a city with no major league championship ring in its history, turns out to be the nation's healthy vision champ.
That's the word from VSP Vision Care, the Rancho Cordova-based vision benefits provider. VSP released its annual Eye Health Index, which is based on the percentage of members who received an eye exam in 2015 in cities with at least 100,000 VSP members.

Could it be that Cleveland has a higher percentage of males than Reno? The research found that by a wide margin, women tend to have their eyes checked more often than men: 58 percent of women had an annual eye exam, compared to 42 percent of men.
VSP did not speculate on why cities such as Reno and Boise were attentive to eye care while Clevelanders, Akronites and folks from five California cities missed their annual appointments. But the top-ranking towns are consistent. The last time VSP produced the index in 2014, the same two cities ranked one and two, although Boise was tops that year, with Reno second.
This year, the cities were close: 45 percent of Reno clients got their eyes checked, while 43 percent of those in Boise went for the annual check-up.
Oklahoma City plan members finished third both years. It is the only city to rank among the top 10 every time since the index was started in 2012.
A company spokesperson said other research has indicated that people who take care of their eyesight tend to take care of their health in general. A study by HCMS determined that people who receive an annual comprehensive eye exam are more likely to enter the health care system earlier for treatment of serious health conditions, thereby significantly reducing their long-term cost of care. Additionally, people are more likely to get an annual comprehensive eye exam than a routine physical.
