Business travel doesn't have to be all work and no play.

Just take a look at a new survey conducted by Hotwire.com. The travel site is promoting the concept of "bleisure" or "workventures," in which you take advantage of a business trip to a new spot by engaging in a little extracurricular activity on the side.

In a survey of nearly 6,500 U.S. adults, the company reports about 10 percent report turning a business trip into a workventure.

Those who seize the leisure opportunities presented by business trips tend to be those who are more likely to seek out chances to travel otherwise. They're also more spontaneous.

Specifically, in the past year:

  • 45 percent of workventurers have taken a spontaneous trip, compared to 27 percent of others.

  • Traveled with family or friends (75 percent vs. 55 percent)

  • Gone on a road trip (67 percent vs. 47 percent)

  • Splurged on a fancy meal (71 percent vs. 41 percent)

The study also noted that workventurers are significantly more likely to enjoy craft beer or describe their diets as healthy.

Essentially, the survey suggests those who enjoy themselves on business trips do more with their free time because, just as they do on work trips, they are more likely to seize opportunities for fun that present themselves, regardless of whether they have planned for them.

"The concept of work/leisure balance has always been confusing to me," explains Hotwire President Henrik Kjellberg in a statement.

"There doesn't need to be a distinction between the two, because work is a part of life. When you love what you do, and you take time to make the most out of every experience, the result is a healthier, happier, more inspired person. And that translates into every facet of life."
