When looking for a new job, one of the biggest questions can be how much vacation they're willing to provide — and how much other time off you'll be paid for, whether it's holidays, sick leave or other categories.

And especially at this time of year, when the holidays are approaching and thoughts turn to how many days of celebration can be marked off on the calendar, that question becomes even more important — despite the fact that Americans can be pretty bad about using all the time off due them.

In fact, a Glassdoor survey has shown that the average American employee only takes half of their vacation time, and when employees do take paid time off, 61 percent admit that they work even then — when they're supposed to be enjoying themselves and recharging.

But that doesn't mean you shouldn't try for the best deal possible when negotiating for a new job. And toward that end, Glassdoor has evaluated the time-off policies of companies as reported by the companies' own employees.

What follows is a list of the top 10 companies for vacation and paid time off, and it's an interesting mix. Biotech, financial services and even warehouse shopping all have a place among the top 10, although depending on your own experience and personal preferences, you might choose to seek out some rather than others.

10. Accenture

Professional services company Accenture, headquartered in Dublin, provides strategy, consulting, digital, technology and operations. The company also doesn't do too badly in providing paid time off. Employees report that paid time off at the company totals three weeks, providing "ample time to take family vacations."

In addition, if workers don't use it all right away, they don't necessarily lose it; they can carry over up to 240 hours to the next year.

McLean, Virginia-based financial services company Capital One is even more generous with paid time off. Employees term the vacation policy "the best thing ever" and report that after 90 days on the job, they can get four weeks of paid time off.

And if that's not enough to convince you to apply, employees report that they can also buy an extra week of paid time off if they wish.

Issaquah, Washington-based Costco has a reputation for treating its employees well. The wholesale club operator, which offers discounted prices on more than 4,000 products from alcoholic beverages to fresh food to tires, has a generous vacation policy.

While employees start with two weeks, every year they stay, they earn more vacation time, up to five weeks' worth — not to mention 10 sick days. They report that the company is "great with working around your schedule" and is very flexible with vacation days.

7. General Motors

Detroit carmaker GM starts employees' paid time off at 15 days and can increase periodically, say employees, but that's not all: 16 paid holidays and unlimited sick time sweeten the pot.

Employees also report "three weeks vacation with an additional week off for Christmas (paid) is fantastic!"

6. Salesforce

Cloud-based customer relationship management software solution company Salesforce, headquartered in San Francisco, apparently also has a pretty good relationship management technique with its employees, providing an "unbelieveable" vacation package.

New employees say they can get 15 days of paid time off along with four floating holidays and six paid volunteering days. After two years, employees say they can get a month of paid time off, and directors and above can have unlimited vacation days.

St. Louis-based agricultural biotech company Monsanto produces genetically engineered seeds and herbicides for farmers, and generous vacation packages for employees.

4. Google

Considering the reputation Silicon Valley companies have for generous pay and benefits, it's no surprise to find Google on the list. Employees of the Mountain View, California-based search engine say vacation and paid time off policies are among the best in the industry.

Workers say they can start with three weeks of paid time off, and can work their way up to five weeks if they stay with the company for five years. They also report they can take up to three months of unpaid sabbatical. Given that managers are good at "providing space to actually take allotted time off," employees say they feel like they essentially have unlimited vacation.

3. Ikea

While headquarters are a bit far afield, in Stockholm, Sweden, the furniture retailer has plenty of store locations across the U.S. It also offers employees plenty of time off.

Workers report that, starting from day one, full- or part-time employees can accrue paid time off and vacation can be taken in one-hour increments. For example, if you only work 32 hours a week, you could use 32 hours of vacation to take a week off (instead of 40). Employees also report that they can get three weeks a year when they begin employment, five weeks a year after five years of employment, and seven weeks a year after 10 years of employment, saying, "Can't beat it!"

2. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

New York City-based Memorial Sloan Kettering deals with some pretty grave issues, so employees probably find the generous paid time off a welcome respite.

They report that not only are they provided with lots of vacation time, they're not pressured not to take it. In some roles, employees can receive up to 20 vacation days, plus float holiday days, sick days and personal days. In addition, employees are happy that "nobody asks questions or makes you feel guilty for taking the time either which is a breath of fresh air."

1. Amgen Inc.

Biotechnology company Amgen is headquartered in Thousand Oaks, California, and offers a pretty amazing starting vacation package.

Not only do new employees start off with three weeks of vacation, they also get two shutdowns over the Fourth of July and Christmas.

"[T]o start with 5 weeks is pretty amazing," according to employees, and while this may be average by European standards, it certainly isn't in the United States. In fact, Amgen's vacation and paid time off benefits are quite competitive by large U.S. company standards. Employees actually say the benefits are "too good to be true"  —so it's probably not surprising that the company came in at first place.
