Competitive intelligence firm Corporate Insight has announced its second annual awards for health care insurance providers with the most innovative digital resources and practices for 2017. In addition, financial services firms were recognized for innovations leading to financial wellness and greater participation.

The Monitor Awards are Corporate Insight’s annual reports that recognize financial services firms and health insurers for excellence in the online and offline experience they offer prospects, clients and advisors. The Monitor Awards program itself is in its 20th year. This year, it presented gold, silver and bronze medals that highlight significant advances in online and mobile offerings within the past year.

Winners were determined through a review by proprietary grading software of major online tools and resources offered by providers. Corporate Insight analysts use live accounts at each health-care and financial institution covered, identifying customer-centric improvements and trends in real time. A year of website tracking and evaluation of the user experience goes into the award assessment for the more than 100 financial services firms and health insurers that undergo the process.

Gold medals, presented for online features that exceed Corporate Insight’s criteria for overall excellence and usability, were awarded to health care insurers Aetna, BCBS of Illinois, BCBS of Massachusetts, Cigna, and United Healthcare.

Trends identified by Corporate Insight during the past year include the growth of wellness programs as a cross-industry priority. United Healthcare, Humana and Aetna all launched new health and wellness campaigns last year that gamify and reward healthy behaviors.

And it wasn’t just all about physical health; recordkeepers pushed ahead on financial wellness, with 11 firms adding new financial wellness resources in 2017, including interactive lessons, webinars, videos, worksheets and an online game.

And mobile apps were on the rise last year as well, with 10 defined contribution plan recordkeepers introducing new mobile apps or enhancing existing platforms. The most notable mobile enhancements, the report says, pertained to profile management features and transaction capabilities.
