Nationally, student loan debt totals more than $1.5 trillion. Where are people paying the most?

Student loan debt is a fact of life for almost all college graduates these days. Student loan debt is up to $1.5 trillion and counting. According to the Pew Research Center, 37 percent of those under 30 carry student debt–but some carry more than others.

Analyzing data from its users, LendingTree put together a ranking of cities with the most and least student loan debt. According to its data, southern states carry the brunt of student loan debt, taking nine of the top 10 spots for most debt. Topping them all, however, was Washington, D.C., where debtors owe an average of $22,803, and nearly 10 percent of debtors owe more than $100,000.
