The pace of change has accelerated far beyond anything earlier generations knew or understood -- even the childhood of millennials occurred in a world that was far different from that of children and teens today. Take Gen Z freshmen at colleges across the U.S. The Marist College Mindset List, a quick field guide, if you will, to this year's incoming class of 2023, says "Born in 2001, they have lived in a world in which shedding shoes at airport security... is routine," and Jeopardy host Alex Trebek "has never had a mustache." We've paired the Mindset List with insights from Nevin Adams and the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries to juxtapose how things have changed in the world in the last 20-odd years and in retirement. Then we tossed in a few observations of our own about the worries that are uppermost in the minds of would-be retirees today, compared with what they might have been in the past.
