Atul Gawande made a splash when he was announced as the man who would be spearheading Haven, the much-talked-about health care venture created by Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and JP Morgan Chase. Now, not even two years after his appointment, Gawande is planning to step down and take on a "less operational role," according to the Wall Street Journal.
Sources told WSJ that Gawande wants to focus instead on policy and advocacy, particularly in light of the current coronavirus pandemic.
Since its initial launch, Haven hasn't been the major health care disruption the industry anticipated–at least not yet. Aside from rolling out pilot health insurance programs for some JP Morgan employees, most of the work is currently being done behind the scenes, building databases to capture health care behavior information.
Sources also told WSJ that while Haven has launched its search for a replacement, it has yet to make a decision about who will the role or what the next iteration of the leadership structure will look like.
