Federal lawsuit targets Cigna's emergency care reimbursements

Tenet Healthcare is accusing Cigna of reimbursing claims at low rates and wrongfully denying claims for emergency medical services.

Attorneys at Robinson & Cole on Thursday removed an ERISA lawsuit against Cigna to Connecticut District Court. The suit, filed on behalf of Tenet Healthcare and 19 of its hospitals accuse Cigna of reimbursing claims at low rates and wrongfully denying numerous claims for emergency medical services rendered.

The lawsuit alleges that Cigna’s reimbursement rates for Tenet Hospitals are below what would be considered “fair and reasonable,” but that Tenet is legally obligated to provide care for Cigna members seeking emergency care.

The case is 3:22-cv-00602, Vhs of Arrowhead, Inc. d/b/a Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital and Abrazo Arrowhead Campus et al v. Cigna Health and Life Insurance Company.
