In the hit Broadway musical Avenue Q, a not-so-thinly-veiled parody of Sesame Street, recent college grad (and puppet) Princeton sings longingly about finding his "Purpose" in life. The show debuted almost 20 years ago, but as a new study from Great Place to Work® reveals, purpose is still top of mind for workers of all ages and particularly for millennials—even if they don't get to sing about it while accompanied by a chorus of moving boxes. Research from the business consulting service revealed that 79% of millennials reported feeling their work had special meaning, illustrating the largest gap in employee experience compared to baby boomers, 90% of whom reported that satisfaction. Millennials are three times more likely to stay at a job where they feel a real sense of purpose, Great Place to Work® discovered, and nearly two times more likely to stay if they feel their voice is valued. The focus on millennials might seem curious, as the workforce is currently made up of four different generations. However, research shows that millennials and Gen Z workers are the least likely to stay at their jobs, compared to their older counterparts—particularly if they feel those jobs lack meaning. "There's a lot millennials can teach companies about work," Great Place to Work CEO Michael C. Bush says. "How they spend their time and who they spend it with matters to them, as it should to all of us." Great Place to Work® has also released its annual list of best workplaces for millennials. Only three companies from last year's top 10 made the cut in 2022, including the top spot. Nevertheless, each company listed ticks all the boxes—purpose, fair pay, profit sharing, clear expectations from management, and work-life balance—for millennials in today's workforce. As Great Place to Work® content director Roula Amire writes, employers should "close all the gaps and create a great workplace for all. There will be quite the payoff for companies who do."
