Next to food, vet bills and vaccinations are the biggest expenditure dog owners face, according to Forbes Advisor. While 28% of dog owners said the vet is their biggest monthly cost, just 2% reported having pet insurance. Further, 37% of dog owners have never considered obtaining coverage for their furry friends. Behind the low level of adoption are misperceptions about price, Forbes Advisor found. Nearly 90% of dog owners think pet insurance would cost more than it actually does. In fact, 76% overestimate the cost of pet insurance by at least three times the average price. On average, pet insurance with $5,000 in annual coverage costs around $34 a month for a puppy, $35 for a dog and $28 for a cat, according to Forbes Advisor. For pet insurance with unlimited annual coverage, the average monthly price for a dog is $53 and $39 for a feline. Despite the current number of pet owners that buy coverage, the U.S. pet insurance market is expected to grow 10.6% by 2028, according to BlueWeave Consulting. More pet owners, consumers' desires to reduce financial risk and high vet costs are anticipated to drive the market. The above slideshow reveals the dog breeds that have the highest average pet insurance claims, according to Forbes Advisor. To build the list, Forbes Advisor reviewed pet insurance claim filings from June 2017-June 2020. Claims data reflects the portion of the vet bill covered by insurance, which ranged from 70%-100%, minus any deductible. Related: |
