Driving the industry forward: People and technology

Innovation and technology are incredibly exciting, but to me, nothing is more interesting or inspiring than the people who are making it all happen.

We talk a lot about the enormous amount of funding pouring into our industry right now. I got a firsthand taste recently while attending the massive Insurtech Connect show in Vegas. The innovation and enthusiasm on display from speakers and in the exhibit hall provided the latest evidence that any lingering stereotypes about an industry stuck in the past are extremely outdated.

But while there was no shortage of groundbreaking technology on display, I was encouraged by the continued focus on people. Yes, even at a conference dedicated to technology, humanity remained at the forefront.

As Symetra’s Rafat Sarosh, put it, “Don’t start with the technology. Start with the desired business outcome. What is the value you’re trying to create?” Another panelist added, “Technology is important, but it’s about people coming together to solve problems. A little bit of art and science.”

Speaking of people, progress and problem solving, this issue features our inaugural class of LUMINARIES honorees, made up of individuals and organizations recognized for the ways they are driving our industry forward.

The honorees demonstrate the tremendous impact firms and individuals can have within the benefits and health care communities when it comes to DE&I; education and communication; leadership; and humanizing benefits. If you need further proof of the progress being made (or if you could just use a little inspiration) be sure to spend some time exploring this year’s list.

As we look to 2023 and beyond, another area of focus will be the bevy of upcoming health care reform measures and regulations on the horizon. In “Bracing For Impact”, experts preview areas they’ll be watching, highlight how legislation could affect you and your clients, and discuss ways to prepare.

Elsewhere, this month’s Face Of Change, Bryce Heinbaugh, talks a lot about the growing number of people who are joining the benefits world from other places in order to help drive true change and make a difference. As he puts it, “The two most important days in a person’s life are the day they’re born and the day they figure out why. I’ve figured out why.”

Innovation and technology are incredibly exciting, but to me, nothing is more interesting or inspiring than the people who are making it all happen. One of my favorites quotes I heard in Vegas was: “Technology won’t replace what we do, it will elevate what we do and allow us to spend more time advising our clients.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself.
