Wait, can it really already be time to write another end of year column? I know it’s a cliche that each year seems to pass more quickly than the last, but after time stood still during lockdown and the height of the pandemic, it now seems to be more than making up for it.

A big part of this blink-and-you’ll-miss-it feeling can probably be attributed to the chaos of the entire world ramping back up to “normal.” As many businesses return to some form of in-office work, travel schedules have also largely rebounded to their previous peaks. And all of this is taking place as we each scramble to put our lives back together in the wake of unprecedented disruption. Seems like everyone deserves a pat on the back, wouldn’t you say?

This issue offers a balance of retrospection and anticipation, as we look back on the year that was and also begin to prepare for what’s next. Our annual Year In Review timeline provides visual evidence of a 365-day period packed with change and disruption. From sweeping regulatory shifts and quickly multiplying compliance checklists, to another infusion of innovation from startups and retail giants alike, to the ongoing impacts of the pandemic on everything from health care costs to mental health and financial wellness, there’s a whole lot to cover. No wonder we’re all so tired!

Our cover story features a mix of reflections and prognostications from top benefits thought leaders. In an industry as complicated and fast-moving as ours, the future can become overwhelming and scary, but this feature offers both practical advice and encouragement. And the power of partnerships continues to play a key role in future success. As Chelsea Ryckis puts it, “Find what speaks to you in the industry and go all in on it. Just as employees want to work with a company that is in alignment with their values, companies want to work with those who align with their values. Don’t be afraid to show passion and speak your values so like-minded people can find you.”

“One step at a time. There is a lot on all of our plates, but by moving forward (and not panicking) we can continue to serve our clients with excellence and improve the American health care system.”

Thanks for another great year! I look forward to seeing what’s next.
