Creating meaningful relationships and leading by example

Take a moment to explore the incredible work our next three features — Leslie, Heather, and Pamela — are doing to enhance our industry.

I’m still buzzing with excitement from my recent attendance at the BenefitsPPRO BrokercExpo a few weeks ago, and I’m already counting down the days until next year’s event in Boston on May 6-8 — mark your calendars now! One of the most rewarding outcomes of this article series has been witnessing the connections formed among the remarkable women featured here, many of whom have had the chance to meet in person at industry conferences. In Denver, we were thrilled to have over 35 past features in attendance! It was truly inspiring to connect with female peers from across the country. I must give a special shoutout to  the newly crowned Chelsea Ryckis, the third female to be recognized as the Broker/Advisor of the Year!

Over the past decade, I’ve been privileged to witness the rise of phenomenal women in leadership within our industry. These are the women who continually strive to bring others into our circle, uplift their peers, share ideas generously, and always make space for one more chair at the table. Our next three features — Leslie, Heather, and Pamela — embody these same values. Take a moment to explore the incredible work they’re doing to enhance our industry.

Leslie Ferguson, Allstate Benefits

“Creating meaningful relationships is my superpower!  When I enter a room, my presence is felt and the energy in the room shifts.  This is not to boast but to boldly walk in the fullness of who I am as a person and leader. My biggest accomplishment last year was being able to move into a role that matches my personality to my profession and ultimately to profitability!  Over my 20-year career in the insurance industry, I have traversed various aspects of the business while mentoring women and championing change along the way.  Obtaining my Certification in Diversity and Inclusion from Cornell University cemented my dedication for us all to win, no matter our background.  Now as the Vice President of Broker Relationships at Allstate Benefits, I demonstrate how being the person brokers know, like and trust is the direct connection to my personal brand, business growth and profitability for the company.  This means, my role is not work. It’s just me waking up to be me!”

Heather Siems, Morrison Insurance Services

“2023 started a journey of shifting out of 13+ years in the voluntary benefits space partneringand working alongside brokers, to becoming a benefits advisor myself.  I am proud of the business I am building and have been able to integrate my experience in worksite benefits and employee education into becoming a holistic advisor.  My favorite part of this journey so far has been networking and meeting new partners in all aspects of business who I can provide as resources to my clients.

Although no longer running an agency, it was important to me to continue to be a leader, inspire others, and stay connected in our community.  I have been able to do this by continuing to serve on CAHIP boards, and even speaking publicly for the first time at our Elevate Women’s Leadership Summit, sharing my passion for gratitude and how it can positively influence our lives.”

Pamela Schlotzhauer, United Benefit Advisors (UBA)

“Over the past year, I’ve welcomed nearly 20 new agencies into the UBA Community. Witnessing others thrive from connections I facilitate or gain crucial knowledge from our conferences is immensely satisfying.

As a former independent agency owner, I find immense joy in connecting with and inspiring others. My journey in the employee benefits industry was shaped by invaluable mentorship and collaboration. As a single mom at the time, I sincerely appreciated every helping hand.

Today, I’m fulfilled by paying it forward and fostering a network where everyone can thrive together. In this era where connections are crucial, I believe in the power of mutual support and diverse perspectives. Diversity and inclusion are critical components of success.

I’m thrilled to persist in cultivating a network where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. My preference lies in extending support rather than seeking it.  Having this outlook serves as a reminder for me to continue to look for ways to make a positive mark on the employee benefits industry.”

Aware of an outstanding woman in our industry making waves? I’d love to hear about her too! Please don’t hesitate to send an email my way (scombs@combsandco.com) and introduce us, so I can welcome her into our circle as well!
