Women changing the face of insurance

In a traditionally male-dominated field, women in the insurance industry are breaking barriers and setting new standards through resilience, leadership, and an unwavering dedication to client service. On their individual journeys, these women have built agencies, faced challenges head-on, and achieved personal and professional milestones. Their stories reflect a shared commitment to innovation, mentorship, and the pursuit of meaningful connections with clients and colleagues alike. Through their achievements and contributions, they are not only reshaping the industry, but also inspiring the next generation of women leaders to make their mark. 

This month, we feature three exceptional leaders: April Hartloff, Jennifer McKenzie, and Jill Pedersen, whose unique paths and dedication to their work offer a powerful glimpse into the changing face of the insurance landscape.

April Hartloff, Hartloff Benefit Solutions LLC

“Growing up and working on my family’s dairy farm instilled a work ethic that has guided me through over 30 years in the insurance industry, with the last 18 focused on employee benefits. Recently, we celebrated our “5 & 2 Anniversary”: five years since launching my own employee benefits agency and two years in an office building I purchased and renovated. During this journey, I developed the “3 E’s of Benefits: Educate, Empower & Enroll,” a guiding principle that has fueled our growth.

Today, we’re proud to serve over 275 business owners and 30 municipalities. This year closed with the incredible honor of being named the 2024 Women Small Business Owner of the Year in East Aurora, New York.

Jennifer McKenzie, McKenzie Insurance Solutions LLC

“My biggest accomplishment has been taking the leap to leave a secure position at an established firm, where I’d spent 10 years, and start my own agency. It was a bold step, but with the incredible support of family, friends, and colleagues, I took the plunge — and in January, I’ll celebrate seven years in business!

This past year, my key achievement was finding the right person to help run my agency. I needed someone ready to roll up their sleeves, work alongside me (not just “for” me), and create a seamless operation behind the scenes while maintaining the high-touch, responsive service I provide to my clients. That person turned out to be someone with no broker experience, but an HR background like mine. We started with a part-time trial, where she discovered her passion for the field and became licensed. Now, she’s my right hand, and I can’t imagine the agency without her.

“For me, success is all about my professional family — their growth and accomplishments fuel my passion. This year, we faced some challenges: a long-time employee left the industry, and another team member was on extended leave after major surgery. With a small team of five, their absences left a significant void, and it took time for us to fully rebound.

A new milestone for me was being featured on a podcast! As a member of the Broker Council for BerniePortal, I participated in their Brokers’ Corner podcast after their annual event, Weekdays with Bernie. I had no idea it would be so much fun!

As a founding board member of the Ellevate Foundation, I also pay it forward by hosting the Women’s Leadership Summit alongside close friends — an invaluable experience each year.

But the top highlights of all? Becoming a Gigi, with the birth of my first grandchild, Wesley, and celebrating my youngest son’s wedding. My heart is beyond full.”
