Kroger Health, the health care division of The Kroger Co., will resume providing access to prescription medications and health services for Express Scripts customers.

The move, announced Wednesday, comes about two-and-a-half years after Kroger ended an agreement with the Cigna Group pharmacy benefits manager.

“At Kroger Health, we believe everyone should have access to comprehensive health care,” Colleen Lindholz, president of Kroger Health, said in a statement. “We look forward to again serving Express Scripts customers. This agreement reaffirms our commitment to bringing high-quality services to more customers across the country.”

Lindholz did not offer a reason for the resumption of services.

According to Reuters, the grocery retailer notified Express Scripts in September 2022 of its plan to terminate the pharmacy provider agreement for commercial customers because of an “unsustainable” pricing model. Later that year, Kroger Health contracted with Prime Therapeutics, the PBM owned by Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

Under the newly announced agreement, the Kroger Family of Pharmacies immediately resumes serving customers who are part of Express Scripts’ Medicare Part D plans and Tricare/Department of Defense plans. Additionally, Express Scripts commercial and Medicaid clients can add the Kroger Family of Pharmacies to their respective networks. Collectively, these plans cover more than 100 million people in the United States.

The Kroger Family of Pharmacies operates more than 2,200 pharmacies across 35 states, and The Little Clinic offers telehealth services in nine states, as well as more than 220 in-person clinics in eight states.
