President Donald Trump said he is nominating Susan Monarez, the acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to be the agency’s permanent chief.

“Dr. Monarez brings decades of experience championing Innovation, Transparency, and strong Public Health Systems,” Trump said on his social-media platform on Monday.

Trump said she would work closely with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., adding that the two would “prioritize Accountability, High Standards, and Disease Prevention to finally address the Chronic Disease Epidemic and, MAKE AMERICA HEALTHY AGAIN!”

Before being tapped as the acting head of the CDC, Monarez was deputy director of ARPA-H, a federal agency created during the Biden administration that set out to fund innovative biomedical research.

Her selection follows the White House’s decision to pull the nomination of former congressman and physician Dave Weldon to lead the CDC earlier this month. Key Republican senators had expressed concern about his views on the current vaccine schedule for children.

CBS News first reported her pick.
