Many employers don’t realize that provider-led bundle programs — which offer comprehensive health care services for costly health conditions at a single, pre-determined price to employers — can cut health care costs significantly.

“Employers may be more familiar with payer-led bundles, which are more common, and may not immediately recognize the value of provider-led bundles or how they differ from traditional benefit programs,” Brittany Cunningham, vice president for the Episodes of Care Office for Population Health at Nashville-based Vanderbilt Health Employer Services, told BenefitsPRO.

Cunningham is a nurse who created and developed the provider-led MyHealth Bundles at VHES, in which clinical care is prioritized, with the payment model built around it.

“Some employers may fear that implementing bundled payment options will disrupt or replace existing benefits,” she said. “In reality, provider-led bundles are designed to complement existing offerings. Our bundles provide end-to-end health care services for some of the most costly health conditions for a single, predictable fee for the employer.”

VHES recently released its annual MyHealthBundles Impact Snapshot, which indicates the impact bundles can have on both employers’ bottom lines and patient outcomes.

Highlights from the snapshot include:

  • Employers saved 16% on health care spending, as well as reduced variation in care, by using MyHealthBundles.
  • In 2024, 90% of MySpineHealth surgery patients returned to work within 90 days.
  • Unnecessary surgeries have been avoided for hip osteoarthritis, knee osteoarthritis, and shoulder pain.
“Employers need to have a clear understanding of how bundled programs work and the advantages they offer to make informed decisions,” Cunningham said. “This includes transparent data on cost savings, patient outcomes, and the overall impact of bundled care offerings on their workforce — such as improved return to work rates and higher net promoter scores that showcase employee satisfaction. By recognizing the value of this approach and partnering with a trusted provider, employers can ask the right questions and receive the guidance needed for successful implementation and integration.”
