Dental and vision plans offered by UnitedHealthcare scored the highest on a customer satisfaction survey conducted by J.D Power and Associates. The survey measured satisfaction based upon coverage, cost, communication, customer service and reimbursement, and analyzed responses from more than 5,600 vision and dental plan members.

UnitedHealthcare had the highest cumulative score for its dental plan with 753 points and its vision plan with 732 points. Total possible points were 1,000. The survey was J.D. Power's first attempt to rank dental plans according to customer satisfaction.

Here are the scores of the top dental plan providers, according to the survey:

  1. UnitedHealthcare—753
  2. Aetna—734;
  3. Humana—728;
  4. Cigna—726;
  5. Metlife—705;
  6. Guardian—699;
  7. United Concordia—695.

The average dental score was 723, J.D. Power said.

For vision, the breakdown of provider scores was:

  1. UnitedHealthcare—732
  2. EyeMed—717
  3. Davis Vision—706
  4. VSP—702

The average vision score was 709.

Other survey highlights:

  • Among dental plan members who rate overall satisfaction with their dental provider outstanding (10 on a 10-point scale), 84 percent say they "definitely will" choose their current provider in the future, compared with the report average of 43 percent.
  • The most common types of dental care services used in the past year include regular check-ups or cleaning (86 percent); X-rays (58 percent); fillings (32 percent); and crowns or bridges (18 percent).
  • Across all dental plan providers, 41 percent of members indicate they have not received any information about their plan from their provider. Overall satisfaction among those members is 673, which is 50 points below the report average and 116 points below that among members who did receive some type of information from their provider.
  • Among vision plan members who rate overall satisfaction outstanding (10 on a 10-point scale), 87 percent say they "definitely will" choose their current provider in the future, compared with the report average of 42 percent.
