Stocks fell in early trading on Wall Street Wednesday after weak reports on hiring and growth at service companies dampened the outlook for the U.S. economy.
Stocks opened higher on Wall Street, pushing the Dow Jones industrial average to new highs, after the government said unemployment claims fell last week.
The Dow Jones industrial average, an index of 30 U.S. stocks and a gauge of financial markets, closed at a record high of 14,253 on Tuesday. The Dow has more than doubled since hitting a 12-year low in March 2009.
Stocks opened lower on Wall Street Friday, with the Dow pulling back from close to a record, as automatic government spending cuts are about to kick in.
Stocks remained in a holding pattern Thursday. Major indexes edged lower after a report that showed the jobs market is maintaining a slow, but steady, recovery failed to inspire investors.
